Grief takes on many forms, even when it is us who initiated the change.
When our lives take a new direction, that often means our path curves away from the path we shared with people who mean a lot to us…
Today, I had to say goodbye in my heart to cherished tax clients of 20 years. We have journeyed together in that 20 years in ways you can’t imagine unless you are a preacher, doctor, a therapist, accountant or a bookkeeper…. They journeyed with me too, including indulging my babies when I stayed for coffee when picking up taxes of shut-ins, checking on me when I was really sick and even taking photos of my chickens for kicks when they came to my place to pick up their taxes. We did life together!
My heart aches so much that my eyes are spilling out streams of sorrow.
Income Tax Specialists see people at their most vulnerable place, finances… we also see their medical.
Believe me, numbers tell truth stories like no other. I could probably write a whole book on this.
However, most of you will get what I am saying, I encountered people in places most never tell their children, and sometimes not even their spouse.
I loved people in this space and they felt safe, safe enough sometimes to share things they have never told a soul.
And I loved them more.
I was like a daughter to some to others, a teacher and to others, a counsellor. Most of all, I was always a friend. One year, I even helped put a marriage and a family back together.
You see tax consulting is not about forms, it’s about real people. People I love, I cherish, and now may never see again…
I love God and I am following the orders he gave me on a different path. It doesn’t mean it’s all roses and sunshine though.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).
For my comfort comes from the past blessing of serving others in a privileged place. Amen
